The refugees probably fled to survive in the nearby safe borders or fled to other countries who accepted them. Just like what happened to the Syrian refugees. At one point in time when refugees from Vietnam were accepted with open arms in Philippines, United States, China and Canada.
One thing for sure better read the Holy Bible of what happened with the slaves, servants and the subjects of the Great Egyptian Empire. Under the command of Moses and Aaron the Jews fled Egypt and traveled the long journey to "paradise" or Promised land. This long journey for 40 days (?) or 40 years (?) is called EXODUS. Why the term Exodus? They traveled through the scorching heat of the sun on the desert. Ex o dus. Did they really reach the so called "PROMISED LAND?"

The source of food was so scarce that they always end up fighting and killing each other (within the family, clan and outside of their clans). Too many ancient thieves popularized in the Bible and they were hanged to death, clubbed to death, crucified and eaten alive or left to dry on the cross and then eaten with grains of salt (drained of blood). Barbaric? Then the Vikings did the same way to ease their hunger, they practiced cannibalism during the early dawn of civilization.
